United Nations: Are We Really United?

Yesterday the Palestine Authority got voted into the United Nations. It doesn't get to vote, but it is recognized as a state. One hundred thirty-eight countries voted for Palestine, nine voted against, and forty-one abstained. This is turning into a pretty big deal from the U.S. perspective. The NY Times called it "a blow" to the United States.

Here's the deal: I don't understand why the U.S. feels like it gets to be upset that Palestine is getting recognized. We completely took their land after World War II to make Israel. How is it a surprise that they're upset? Granted, taking other peoples' land is something the U.S. is really good at, but why is it that we feel like we should decide whether or not Palestine gets to be part of the United Nations?

The more countries in the United Nations, the better! The whole point of the UN is to "unite nations," isn't it? I feel like the U.S. is that popular girl who is a major diva and tells other people not to talk to "that new girl" or something. Why can't we just get over ourselves and accept other people? It's not that hard.

Today I'm going to go out and mingle with people. I am going to say "hi" to five strangers. I think the more united our local communities are, the more united and tolerant our country will be. I challenge you to say "hi" to five strangers today! In our culture it's not normal, but you know, it's not too hard to start.

  1. Palestine's place in the United Nations is so important to peace in the Middle East it isnt even funny. They have a small voice now. a voice that doesnt consist of bombs. And while bombs will more than likely still drop, the UN can sanction Palestine. AND, Palestine has a place to voice concerns about Israeli attacks, to where maybe Israel will be held accountable there.

Also, Israel shouldnt be in the category of Middle East countries we tolerate -- they are the number one recipient of foreign aid from the USA. Anytime the UN proposes sanctions on Israel, the US people in the security council automatically veto it.

    1. I completely agree with you that Palestine should be a part of the UN. It's really important for the Middle East that they are part of the UN.

In terms of Israel, I know they're the number one recipient of foreign aid from us; but we DO just tolerate them. We would never let them do anything we didn't like. Well, now that I think about it, maybe you're right: we don't tolerate them, we order them around.

    2. I mean, Obama has "ordered" them to stop building settlements...and they dont. The International Court of Justice has said that the wall, as well as the settlements are unlawful. But still the United Freakin Nations doesnt do anything. Palestine sends rockets it can't control into Israel, and sends alot of them. Albeit, small rockets that often dont even have warheads on them (aka, large bottle rockets). If the United Nations started playing a role there (and the US stopped paying attention to lobbies) then progress could be made. As long as the US, who has an automatic veto power in the security council, continues to defend Israel from sanctions or any other way of holding them accountable, we will continue to see violence in Israel and in Palestine.

  2. Get your history right: The US did not unilaterally take land from the Palistinians for Israel; The United Nations did that after WWII when the world was dealing with the atrosities the Nazis had perpetuated on the Jews. Where can these people safely go, the world asked after ignoring the plight of the Jews under the Nazis for way too long. You base your whole argument on a false premise. WE, the US, does not unilaterally control the UN and never has.

  3. Today the UN Climate Summit held in Dubai threw out a UK scientist (Monckton, I think his name is) who disagreed that man-made global warming has been taking place. He said that no global temp increase has taken place in the last 16 years as measured by over 3000 land and sea sites around the world. He was thrown out and his credentials were confiscated! The climate did warm in a 16 year period before 1997--periods of warming and cooling are naturally occurring. The UN isn't interested in hearing anything that doesn't conform to its agenda which they have been using to gain control other countries through taxes, punishments etc..So much for us all getting together, listening with respect to other points of view. That's what's happening today-if you don't happen to agree with the prevailing 'wisdom' your out. So, what happened to the tolerant, open-minded left? They and the UN no longer have my respect. PS: are you going to respond to the above reply--you seem selective in what you reply to.

  4. I will reply to both of these next week. I am on an experimental medication that makes me feel like I've lost about 20 IQ points. I'm going off of it early next week, so I will answer these when I get my brain back.
